C
anal Walk, Africa’s largest
shopping and entertainment centre,
was built inside the Century City
(a huge commercial center), near
Johannesburg, S.A.
With more than 400 shops and more than
121.000 sqm /1,331.000 sqft of retail space,
Canal Walk offers the most comprehensive
shopping experience in Africa.
The Centre features two splendid parallel
malls, each with its own particular classical
or Victorian architecture style.
Sicis supplied 600 sqm /6,600 sqft of
“Murano Smalto” mosaic and “Iridium”.
The spectacular mosaic decoration of the
Promotion Court, which depicts two large
geckos, was designed by the Architect
Denis Maas of Monex Design
(design concept, illustration sketches),
while the artistic realization (including the
design layout on site) was done by
Carmen West of European Design.
All the panels were handcut, chip by chip,
according to Sicis’ design and were delivered
in sections to South Africa where the panels
were put together on the premises.
The mosaic floor of the Court had to meet
the highest technical requirements as this
high traffic floor area is also transformed
occasionally into a submerged area.
A very special mosaic called “Iridum”
has been used in order to obtain bright
and luminous effects under the light and
water reflection.
