Developed and created for the legendary Munkegård School in Gentofte,
Denmark, in 1955, but since spread all over the world and used in every-
thing from private residences to universities.
Munkegaard is a design icon, and the ideas behind the fixture and its pres-
ence in the room are so special that it is actually possible to talk of a
product design without any kind of architectural or cultural limitations.
Munkegaard is a carefully designed lighting fixture with regard to both its
design idiom and its lighting concept. The open slots close to the ceiling
surface and the trumpet-shaped reflector side direct the lighting out to
form a ring around the fixture. This serves two purposes: it reduces the lu-
minance transition and it pulls the ceiling surface around the fixture(s) into
the dimensions of the room.
That is why the challenges of an LED conversion of the Munkegaard fixture
have always been centred on retaining the original lighting concept
– otherwise it would not be a true Munkegaard, merely an illuminated ring
on the ceiling.
