FLEMMING LASSEN
Architect Flemming Lassen (1902–1984) was a
modernist and played an active role in bringing
the functionalist movement to Denmark. Flemming
Lassen worked closely with Arne Jacobsen on several
award-winning projects, but his greatest source of
international acclaim is his furniture, which is still
fetching record prices at auctions around the world.
BY LASSEN INTRODUCES VILHELM
By Lassen is now relaunching Flemming Lassen’s sofa design from 1935, naming it Vilhelm in honour of Flemming
Lassen’s father, the sign writer Hans Vilhelm Lassen. Vilhelm is a beautiful padded three-seater with the soft curves
and taut expression that are typical of Flemming Lassen’s design expression. The Danish architect and designer
mastered the balance between the minimalist and the voluminous in designs that challenged conventions. A
visionary modernist, Flemming Lassen created architecture and furniture that were ahead of their time.
The rounded corners frame the sofa perfectly and make it possible to place the sofa in the middle of a room.
The shape invites flow and life to unfold around the sofa, and the stylish gentleman strikes a handsome figure,
also when seen from the back. The back and armrest are tufted with a total of 24 little buttons, a beautiful and
unpretentious detail that only makes the sofa more charming.
DENMARK’S MOST EXPENSIVE SOFA ON AUCTION
The sofa was designed and put into production the same year as Flemming Lassen’s iconic easy chair The
Tired Man, which holds the record as the most expensive easy chair ever sold at auction in Denmark. The sofa
accepted the challenge, and in 2018, it fetched DKK 610,000, making it the most expensive sofa ever sold at
a Danish auction. There is considerable interest in Flemming Lassen’s design, both in Denmark and abroad. All
over the world, design enthusiasts keep a close lookout for works by the Danish architect and designer, and his
furniture is extremely highly rated.
BY LASSEN TODAY
Today, by Lassen’s head office and production facilities are located in the city of Holstebro in western Jutland.
It is by Lassen’s vision to share the Lassen brothers’ design legacy with the coming generations. The Danish
National Art Library has an extensive archive of hitherto unknown designs and architecture by the brothers. Many
of the furniture designs were only made once for the particular building or home they were created for, so to this
day, pieces still come up at auction that were never put into production.
The Lassen brothers’ archive of architecture and furniture design represents the finest qualities of the Danish design
tradition and deserves a wider audience. To that end, we carefully and humbly select the furniture designs we
choose to reintroduce to the world to hopefully live a long life in the homes of future generations as beacons of
the Danish design tradition that has inspired so many design talents.
